What is Bone Grafting?

Once a tooth is extracted (removed), we immediately start to lose the bone in that area. Over time your bone can become very thin in edentulous (toothless) areas.

A bone graft is used to recreate bone and soft supporting tissues lost due to gum disease. It’s also called regenerative surgery. The goal of this surgery is to coax the body into rebuilding the bone and other structures that attach a tooth to the jaw. Regenerative surgery is a treatment for the gum disease called periodontitis. People with periodontitis lose gum coverage and bone support around their teeth. Regenerative surgery regrows these lost tissues.

Sinus Bone Grafting (Sinus Lift)

Bone grafting can repair plaSinus Liftsnned or future dental implant sites that have inadequate bone structure due to previous extractions, gum disease or injuries. Bone grafting will allow enough room to place these dental implants. Because the sinus cavity can be involved at the site of a dental implant in the posterior upper jaw, a special bone grafting procedure called a “sinus lift” is sometimes performed. This procedure consists of the dental implant surgeon entering the sinus and carefully lifting the sinus lining to create a space to accommodate the appropriately sized implant. A bone graft is inserted between the elevated sinus membrane and the floor of the sinus.
